SOAVE

The municipality of Soave is rich in historical, architectural and cultural evidence. The area where we are and the surrounding places offer our guests the opportunity of long walks being enchanted by the vineyards as far as the eye can see, of tasting typical local products thanks to the food and wine roads, of taking part in celebrations, festivals, cultural events and exibitions.

Soave is a municipality of little more than 7000 inhabitants located aproximately 20 km to the east of Verona. From its hills you can see the skyline of Monti Berici and Colli Euganei.

Most people think that the name of the medieval town of Soave comes from the “soavità”,  the goodness of wine that is produced here. But probably were the Svevi, best known here with the name of Soavi, who gave the name in the Middle Ages. They were a tribe of German origin who came to live here because of the strategic position considering the barbaric invasions that took place about 500 AD. There is also evidence of the Roman presence. Graves and tomb stones dating back to Roman times witness 2000 years of history.

A well preserved castle with turreted walls has overlooked the old part of the town since 934 AD.

SOAVE AND THE WINE

Soave gives the name to one of the largest wine districts in the world. A yearly production  that ranges from 53 to 58 million bottles. It is the most important in Italy. Soave hills are the ideal habitat for vines because they are of volcanic turfaceous soil significantly chalky. They are also very rich in fossils. In the museum of Roncà there is an important collection. Both of them are not so far.

From the castle of Soave you can see about  7000 ha of vineyards spotted with the villages, castles, villas and palaces of the 13 municipalities where DOCG Soave Superiore, Recioto di Soave and the Soave DOC are produced.

Soave is a white wine produced from Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave grapes, very appreciated abroad. It is very popular before a meal in bars in the centre of the towns and with fish dishes. Soave can be dry, slightly sparkling or sweet if made with Garganega grapes left overripe. In the latter case it becomes a dessert wine, Recioto. The hilly area of production gives the best quality of Soave, the Classico Superiore, the 20% of the whole production that is of about 50 million litres a year.
From the castle of Soave you can see the vines that make possible such a quantity.

Corte dei Soavi is there, nested in the middle of vineyards in a breathless landscape rich in history and culture.

Soave for its position deserves more than one day or short visit because within 100km and less than one hour by car, you can reach any interesting place in Veneto, a region so rich in history, art, culture, traditions, palaces  churches but at the same time with modern industry and very famous international shows.
